When Life Blurs the Big Picture
Have you ever looked up and thought, How did I get so busy—and why do I feel so spiritually forgetful?
I’ve felt that way often. Days and months fly by, full of errands, school schedules, work projects, and half-drunk cups of coffee. Somewhere in the whirlwind, the bigger story of what God has done slips quietly into the background.
While reading M is for Mama, one line stopped me in my tracks: the author committed to write five days a week—honing her voice, persevering through discouragement, and, eventually, producing a book I’m now holding. She remembered her beginnings and marveled at how God carried her through.
That is exactly what I want: to keep the big things big—to anchor my priorities and remember God’s hand, even when life feels like a blur.
The Problem: We Drift and Forget
Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to remember. Why? Because we’re prone to forgetfulness.
- The Israelites saw the Red Sea part—and grumbled weeks later.
- Jesus fed thousands—yet the disciples panicked about bread the next day.
We are no different. When bills stack up, when prayers seem unanswered, when culture shouts louder than Scripture, it’s easy to act as if God hasn’t come through before.
“We will not hide [His deeds] from their children, but tell the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, His might, and the wonders He has done.” – Psalm 78:4
Psalm 78 is a maskil—a teaching psalm. It urges God’s people to recount His works so the next generation will set their hope in Him. Remembering guards us from spiritual amnesia, keeping our hearts anchored in truth.
Why Remembering Changes Everything
- Remembering Restores Perspective
Life’s urgencies shrink in the light of eternity. Remembering reminds us we are part of God’s bigger narrative. - Remembering Fuels Faith
Rehearsing past deliverances builds courage for current challenges. - Remembering Reorients Priorities
When we see where God has led us, we’re more willing to say “no” to distractions and “yes” to obedience.
Steps to Build a Life of Remembering
1. Capture God’s Work Daily
Just as Israel piled stones after crossing the Jordan, create modern “stones of remembrance.”
- Write: keep a daily or weekly gratitude journal.
- Highlight: mark answered prayers in your Bible margin.
- Save: create a digital photo album titled “God’s Faithfulness” and add images tied to answered prayers or milestones.
Practical Tip: Set a recurring phone reminder once a week: “Pause. Record one way God showed up.”
2. Craft Your Testimony in Writing
Your story matters. The process of articulating how Christ saved you—and the countless ways He has sustained you—cements those truths in your heart.
The Write Your Story Testimony Workbook is designed for exactly this purpose. Inside, you’ll:
- Trace God’s hand through key life events
- Identify pivotal Scriptures
- Outline your testimony so you can share it confidently with others
By writing, you create a spiritual “time capsule” to revisit when doubt surfaces.

3. Speak the Story Often
Remembering isn’t passive; it’s active retelling. Share testimonies around the dinner table, in small group, or with a friend over coffee. Psalm 78 links remembering with telling the next generation.
- Parents: rehearse God’s provision with your kids.
- Friends: swap “God stories” instead of only venting about stress.
- Churches: encourage testimony Sundays.
Every retelling rewires your memory, shifting focus from anxiety to awe.
4. Anchor Scripture into Daily Life
Memorize verses that spotlight God’s faithfulness:
- Lamentations 3:22-23 – “His mercies are new every morning.”
- Psalm 103:2 – “Forget not all His benefits.”
- Joshua 1:9 – “Be strong and courageous … for the Lord your God is with you.”
Print them on index cards, frame them on the wall, or set them as phone wallpapers.
5. Build Rhythms of Reflection
Set aside mini-Sabbaths—a few quiet minutes to revisit journals, thank God, and realign. Monthly or yearly “spiritual audits” help ask:
- Where have I seen God’s hand?
- What am I prone to forget?
- What priorities need re-centering?

Overcoming Barriers to Remembering
Barrier | Why It Trips Us Up | Counter Practice |
---|---|---|
Busyness | Drowns out reflection | Block 10 minutes weekly for journaling |
Pain & Disappointment | Clouds our view | Lament honestly, then recall past deliverance |
Comparison | Fixates on others’ highlight reels | Revisit your unique story of grace |
Realigning Priorities
I’ve noticed that when I slip into survival mode, my planner fills but my soul feels thin. Returning to Psalm 78 re-centers me: God’s story is the foundation, not my endless to-do list. When I intentionally record how He’s provided (a last-minute job opportunity, unexpected encouragement, healing), anxiety loosens its grip. My kids hear me say, “Look how God helped us,” and their faith seeds grow too.

Final Encouragement
Time will keep rushing forward. But we are not powerless passengers. By choosing to remember, we step off autopilot and anchor our hearts in the unchanging faithfulness of God.
Pause today. Write it down. Tell the story again—because remembering leads to right living, and right living points the next generation toward the hope only God provides.
Pause, remember, and tell the story again and again and again.
