We often live our lives dictated by other people – and now, almost more than ever, the algorithm. We want to take hold of our days. We want to include things that we delight in. We want to have hobbies that bring us joy. We want to have meaningful experiences. We want to build a life we love. We want to make and reach our dreams.
But how?
When I finally get out of the tailspin of work, cleaning, and bedtimes – and I get a chance to come up for air, what do I even want to do?
I wrote about this in our post on 5 hobbies that everyone should have. We often live in such a daze that when we have a moment to ourselves, we don’t know what to do. So, we choose the path of least resistance. We turn on a show. We reach for our phones. And, we veg out.
But, when we look at the sum of our lives, is that what we want it to be? Hours and hours spent escaping the actual world we live in?
Most of us would answer, “Of course not!” We have to put our money – or more aptly, our time – where our mouth is. We have to spend our lives on the meaningful things. On what gives life depth and meaning. On the good gifts that God has given us.
We need to spend our lives on our list of 100 dreams.

What is a list of 100 dreams?
100 dreams?!?
Who has 100 dreams?
You may feel like it’s hard to come up with 10, much less 100.
I felt the same way, but I will tell you that creating a list of 100 dreams is a great clarifying exercise that will help you to guide and direct your time. I learned about it in Laura Vanderkam’s 168 Hours.
The idea is simple. Get out a Word doc (or a sheet of paper you won’t lose) and write down a list of 100 dreams (aka things you want to accomplish). These could be lofty things: ‘Write a book,’ ‘Hike Everest,’ ‘Run a Marathon.’ Or they could be simple things: ‘Learn to bake sourdough,’ ‘Play a favorite song on guitar,’ ‘Take a day off work and visit a local state park.’
As you brainstorm your 100 dreams, you’ll find the first part may come easy, but you really have to push yourself to think of the next. You’ll think of little and big things that you might like to do that would never have crossed your mind before.
You can use the following categories while brainstorming your list: Career, Relationships, and Personal.
Here are some questions to get you thinking:
- What work accomplishments would you like to complete by the end of your career?
- What places in the world would you want to see?
- What local restaurants, parks, and notable places would you like to visit?
- What skills, languages, or hobbies would you like to pursue?
- What has always been on your bucket list?
After creating your list of 100 dreams, you may even find that you want to accomplish more than these 100 things. This list can be something you revisit, edit, and add to year after year.
If you have a family, you may also want to include some ‘Family Dreams’ in your list. Ask your kids and your spouse about some dreams that you may want to do together. This can help you create seasonal bucket lists and make lasting memories with your family.

How do you use the list of 100 dreams?
As you complete your weekly review or plan your week, you refer back to the list of 100 dreams and think of ways that you can start accomplishing them in weeks and months ahead. Always wanted to run a 5k? Add a few running sessions to your schedule, and sign up for a 5k. Been meaning to finish up the baby books for your kids? Block out a few hours a week for the next few months and knock the project out.
You’ll find, as you start accomplishing items on your list, that some dreams beget more dreams. Perhaps learning German leads you to book a trip to Berlin for 2 weeks. Or a beginner’s quilting class leads to opening an Etsy shop and selling your wares.
Other times, checking an item off the list leads to marking through a few more. Maybe you signed up for the 5k, hated every minute of it, and decided that pickleball was a much better form of exercise for you. You take off running a Marathon from the list gladly and remove that from your mental headspace, too.
Just because something is on your list of 100 dreams does not mean you have to follow it. Instead, it just gets you thinking: How would I like to spend my days?

We often never really answer that. Our time just seems consumed by all of our responsibilities. When we create a list like this, we refine what we actually want in life, and that clarity might be all it takes for us to move one step closer to our dreams.
After you check something off, you can move on to another dream or add a new dream to your list.

The Summer Day (1992)
—Mary Oliver from New and Selected Poems
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean—
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down—
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
